The everyday hydration guide

WHY DO I NEED
ELECTROLYTES?

Small minerals. Essential everyday jobs. Get to know what they do, what your body loses and how to build a hydration routine that works for you.

Let's start here

WHAT ARE ELECTROLYTES?

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride are examples found in your body. [1]

These are roles of electrolytes in the body, rather than a promise of extra benefits from taking a supplement. [1]

Fluid balance

Electrolytes help regulate the amount of water in your body.

Nerve signals

They help your nerves communicate throughout your body.

Muscle function

They support the normal working of your muscles, including your heart.

After a night's sleep

WAKE UP.
TOP UP.

You lose water through breathing and sweating, even when resting. Because you usually aren't drinking while asleep, these ongoing losses can leave you thirsty in the morning. [2]

A drink when you get up is a simple way to restart your daily hydration routine. If you're thirsty, make it an early part of your morning rather than putting it off.

A night's sleep doesn't automatically mean dehydration or depleted electrolytes. There is no universal need to take electrolytes immediately on waking. Food and drinks supply them across the day. [1] [2]

A routine you can keep

START SIMPLE. KEEP IT FLOWING.

1

Pour a morning drink

Keep water within easy reach. A glass with breakfast is an easy cue to start drinking regularly. [2]

2

Eat for balance

Electrolytes come from everyday food and drinks. A balanced diet is part of replenishing them. [1]

3

Match your day

Heat and long periods of activity can increase fluid needs. Drink regularly and replace extra fluid lost through sweating. [3]

Know your needs

MORE SWEAT? MORE TO REPLACE.

Heavy sweating can disturb fluid and electrolyte balance. What you need to replace depends on your activity, conditions and diet. [1]

Do I need an electrolyte drink every day?

Your body needs electrolytes, but an electrolyte drink isn't essential for everyone. Everyday food and fluids provide them. Water is a healthy everyday hydration choice. [1] [3]

What if I wake up thirsty?

Have a drink and continue drinking regularly during the day. Thirst can be a sign that you need fluids; it doesn't tell you that a particular mineral is low. [2] [1]

What about dehydration caused by illness?

If vomiting or diarrhoea is causing fluid loss, ask a pharmacist about an appropriate oral rehydration solution. A general electrolyte supplement isn't a substitute for this treatment. [4]
